Though the album (DAMN) was nominated for the Grammy Award three times in a row, the rapper in January lost the highly coveted “Album of the Year” to Bruno Mars.

Lamar’s fusion of jazz, poetry and blues with social themes and love songs has made him one of the most innovative rappers of his generation.

An executive of Kendrick’s label, Top Dawg Entertainment commented on the win via his Twitter account.

“Pulitzer Prize winner Kdot from Compton. I bet not ever hear one of you niggas speak with anything less than respect in your mouth for Kendrick Lamar. #TDE.” He said.

Also commenting on the big win, Guardian music editor, Ben Beaumont-Thomas tweeted saying “Kendrick Lamar wins the Pulitzer prize for music! There are some who will say rap doesn’t need it (maybe) and others who’ll say this is the judging panel trying to be down with the kids (nope) but as a marker for rap’s standing in US high culture, it’s a big one.”

Previous Pulitzer music winners include jazz musicians Wynton Marsalis and Ornette Coleman.
