Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr has included Enyimba FC’s captain, Mfon Udoh and four other home–based professionals in the list of 18 Super Eagles that will battle Lone Star of Liberia in an international friendly in Monrovia, tomorrow.
Leadership reports that the coach also listed goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, defenders Adeleye Olamilekan of FC IfeanyiUbah and Ebube Duru of Lobi Stars, as well as Enyimba FC forward Sunday Adetunji.
Apart from goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa who travelled with the team to Seychelles for Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Pirates, all the other home –based professionals have been directed to report at the Sheraton Hotel in Lagos, today, latest by 3pm.
Ezenwa and the 13 other players would fly into Lagos from Addis Ababa on Monday, before the contingent is flown to Monrovia this evening aboard an ARIK Air plane.
The match is in celebration of Liberian President, former World Footballer of the Year George Oppong Weah, and is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the 35,000 –capacity Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.
Meanwhile, Gernot Rohr has expressed satisfaction with his side performance against Seychelles. The three time African champions defeated Seychelles 3-0 in 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier Group E tie at the weekend. A Seychelles own goal and two strikes from Chidozie Awaziem and Odion Ighalo helped the Super Eagles win away.
It was Nigeria’s maiden win of the qualifying campaign, having lost 2-0 to South Africa at home in June 2017. Rohr feels that his charges never underestimated Seychelles.
“We are very satisfied with the result as the important thing was to win three points,” CSN quoted Rohr as saying post-match.
“It was not easy as our opponents were very combative and aggressive.
“We started well though in the second half we found it hard playing against the wind,” he continued. “Our opponents also worked hard and we never underestimated them.”
Nigeria’s next AFCON qualifier will be against Libya in October 2018.
